This is a Mino ware Japanese ceramic tea cup, also known as a Yunomi, featuring a Daruma pattern and the Japanese proverb for "seven times down, eight times up".
The inscription is the Japanese proverb
Nanakorobi Yaoki (七転び八起き), meaning "seven times down, eight times up" or "never give up". Japanese Daruma doll that is associated with the proverb because it is weighted at the bottom and rights itself when knocked over. The cup itself is a traditional handleless teacup, a Yunomi.
Daruma figures are also Japanese lucky charms symbolizing perseverance and resilience. Excellent condition.
Mino ware pottery has a wide variety of looks & textures that easily blends into daily lives. Mino ware is one of Japanese famous potteries, and it has a history of about 1,300 years.
